Maritime and Aviation Internship Scheme – Visits to Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings Limited and the Government Dockyard
July 2025
The Maritime and Aviation Training Fund (MATF) has entered its eleventh year, marking the Hong Kong SAR Government's continued support for the development of talent in the maritime and aviation industries. The fund collaborates with industry enterprises to provide internship opportunities. Eligibility for the scheme includes secondary-six school leavers and full-time local students undertaking undergraduate or sub-degree programs at any institution worldwide. Interns not only gain valuable work experience but also participate in related exchanges and visits to explore a broader understanding of the maritime industry.
To deepen interns' understanding of maritime operations in Hong Kong, the fund arranged a government dock visit on 18 July 2025. Students had the opportunities to enter the simulation room, where they simulated the navigation of a container ship and a patrol vessel in Hong Kong waters. This experience allowed them to grasp basic nautical knowledge and properly use navigation equipment. Additionally, professionals from the Marine Department explained the responsibilities of various positions within the department and shared their daily work experiences, helping interns better understand real working conditions and career advancement pathways, enabling them to plan their careers effectively.
To further broaden the horizons of the student interns, on 25th July, interns visited Wah Kwong Shipping Holdings Limited, which is headquartered in Hong Kong. They learned about business operations, ship management, and industry development in the maritime industry, engaging in face-to-face discussions with senior executives, technical experts and maritime professionals who shared their career journeys and insights gained in the maritime industry. This interaction inspired interns to consider their career development direction and encouraged them to establish their goals early, deepening their understanding of the diverse opportunities within various maritime professions.
Through the internship program, participating students gain valuable work experience, explore the latest developments in the maritime industry, and formulate their own career plans in advance. This broadens their exposure to a wide spectrum of career opportunities, enabling them to gain a clearer understanding of the career prospects across various professions in the maritime industry.
